EU: Industry Initiative for Increased Recycling

In the European Union the recycling of beverage cartons is growing and reached 48 percent in 2017, the total recovery rate achieved 76 percent.

ACE – the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment – has very much welcomed the revised Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive and the introduction of a mandatory separate collection of packaging waste in the EU. Since the organization is working with national beverage carton associations to support recycling performance across Europe, the members of ACE – BillerudKorsnäs, Elopak, SIG, Stora Enso and Tetra Pak – have decided to launch a new pan-European platform to coordinate the industry’s engagement in recycling across Europe. It will coordinate and drive EU-wide and country-specific solutions to optimize beverage carton collection and recycling. The intention is to establish alliances and partnerships with industry actors sharing similar needs to ensure and scale up recycling solutions.
