Turning City Waste into Bio-Based End Products

At the end of July 2026, the European project SOWISE+ (Solid Organic Waste into Sustainable End-Products) was launched in Italy.

It aims to demonstrate a first-of-its-kind multipurpose bio-refinery for the valorization of urban bio-waste and post-consumer absorbent hygiene products into advanced bio-based materials and products. By combining waste management, biotechnology, material science, industrial demonstration and stakeholder engagement, the 24 project partners from seven European countries aim “to create a lighthouse example for integrated urban-industrial symbiosis across Europe”. SOWISE+ runs until 30 June 2031 and is co-funded by the European Union.
