EMSUR Has Joined the CEFLEX Initiative, Reinforcing its Commitment to Sustainability and the Circular Economy

EMSUR is the most recent member of CEFLEX, the consortium of European companies that promotes the circularity of flexible packaging.

This is an initiative that includes more than 130 bodies, representing the whole of the flexible packaging value chain, that have joined forces to promote a circular economy model and plan to develop an infrastructure for the collection, sorting and reprocessing of post-consumer flexible packaging throughout Europe by 2025.

In 2020 CEFLEX intends to develop and implement a road map for flexible packaging based on sustainability and the circular economy which, amongst other aspects, includes guidelines on design, added value and resource efficiency. This road map will be available to all interested parties, not just members of the consortium.

CEFLEX also envisages the continuity of the projects already under way:  REFLEX, a project that studies and seeks solutions to the technical barriers in mechanical recycling of post-consumer flexible packaging and FIACE, a project that analyses the added value of flexible packaging for the circular economy. The undertaking of both these projects offers a good basis for achievement of the objectives set by the consortium for 2020 and 2025 at European level.

The work stream defined by CEFLEX comprises seven clearly defined stages, from the initial road map to communicating the initiatives and objectives of stakeholders to promote support for the development of infrastructures.

“EMSUR’s participation in this initiative is a step forward in our commitment to achieving a sustainable future for flexible packaging based on a circular model as a real and reliable alternative. Through CEFLEX we contribute to developing the necessary infrastructure to recycle flexible packaging and to promote its circularity.” Alberto Gallardo, EMSUR CEO.

Commitment to Sustainability
EMSUR’s commitment to Sustainability is based on providing packaging solutions that contribute to food availability and reduce the environmental impact by optimising use of natural resources. The company’s vision of sustainability focuses on the eco-design and the recyclability of its packaging, reinforcing its contribution to a circular economy model.

EMSUR’s latest innovation in this field has recently been presented: its compostable barrier bag. This new sustainable alternative is specially designed for the coffee market, although it is transferrable to other product categories. This new development can also be used as a packaging solution and compostable alternative for food products that require Bio, natural or Organic positioning.

INNOTECH, COEXPAN-EMSUR’s R+D centre, offers the possibility of researching new application options for both rigid and flexible packaging and has become a benchmark for accelerating solutions and addressing the industry’s major challenges in the area of sustainability and circularity. Furthermore, a few months ago, EMSUR Argentina together with COEXPAN Chile presented their removable banderole specifically for dairy products, developed for Nestlé Chile and contributing to plastic recyclability.

In addition to the recent CEFLEX membership, COEXPAN and EMSUR also form part of the Circular Plastics Alliance, an initiative that aims to boost the circular economy of plastics by promoting the use of recycled material and quality recycling processes. In this way it reinforces its commitment to sustainability and to the objectives established by the European Union to achieve the incorporation of more than 10 million tons/year of recycled plastic by 2025.

EMSUR has quality and food safety policies in place that are based on excellence and continuous improvement. Along these lines, EMSUR SPO France and EMSUR Poland have recently been awarded EcoVadis certification, highlighting the company’s commitment to working to achieve a sustainable future.
